Authenticated SMTP provides an access control mechanism (login, password) used to allow legitimate users to relay mail while denying relay service to unauthorized users, such as spammers.
The authenticated smtp server is configured to authenticate with the LDAP server so your MyUNL login and password will be needed for sending email. The outgoing smtp server is: smtp.unl.edu and the client is required to use TLS (transport layer security).
In Mac Mail (info is from OSX 10.4) pull down the Mail menu and select preferences; then select the Accounts Icon; and select the Server Settings button in the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) section of the window.
In the Outgoing Mail Server window put smtp.unl.edu in the Outgoing Mail Server box; check in front of Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL); Authentication should be Password; enter your MyUNL login in the User Name box; enter your MyUNL password in the Password box (NOTE your MyUNL account information may/will not match your Incoming Mail Server account information in the previous screen); select OK and start sending email.
In Thunderbird (from version 1.5.0.10) pull down the Tools menu and select Account Settings; Select Outgoing Server (SMTP)
Enter smtp.unl.edu in the Server Name box; Check Use name and password; enter your MyUNL login in the User Name box (NOTE your MyUNL account information may/will not match your Incoming Mail Server account information); Select TLS, if available under Use secure connection; press OK and start sending email
